Drug Interactions Project

The San Diego County Cannabis Public Health Initiative (CPHI) engaged in a community-service based project to assess public perception and knowledge regarding cannabis and prescription medication interactions. The goal of this project was to increase awareness on cannabis drug interactions to both healthcare professionals and consumers who use cannabis products.

The CPHI, in partnership with a group of medical experts, developed an informational resource card to educate patients on the potential adverse interactions between cannabis and prescription medications. Resource cards were distributed to seventeen local pharmacies that partnered with the CPHI on this project to distribute to patients picking up prescriptions.

In total, over 12,000 resource cards were distributed to patients picking up prescriptions. A survey was conducted for both participating pharmacy staff as well as consumers receiving the informational card. Results from the survey highlighted the need for patient education and awareness regarding potential drug interactions.

While the project has ended, the informational resource cards are available in both English and Spanish at the links below.

Vision Zero Impaired Driving Campaign

Center for Community Research (CCR) is partnering with the Vision Zero impaired driving campaign to counter historic numbers of DUI cases, as multi-substances have been implicated in many local traffic fatalities. CCR, in collaboration with numerous community partners, has joined forces to raise awareness about polydrug use and driving.

Cannabis Public Health Signage

The CPHI has developed public health signage for San Diego County unincorporated cannabis businesses. Signs detail the effects of cannabis on the body including addiction, impact on mental well-being, brain health, effects on driving, drug interactions, pre-natal use and overall physical health. Signs instruct consumers to verify the business license through the Department of Cannabis Control website.

Signs discuss the importance of storing your marijuana products away from children as well as being mindful that budtenders are not trained to provide medical guidance about cannabis use.
