International Overdose Awareness Day in San Diego

On Monday, August 31, we commemorated 645 lives who died by accidental overdose in San Diego County last year. For International Overdose Awareness Day, a variety of County and other officials shared how these deaths did not need to happen and no one else has to die. These speakers, including a mother who lost her son to an overdose, spoke in front of the lawn of 645 placards.

Though International Overdose Awareness Day is over, there are ways you can help. If you or someone you know needs help, they can call the County’s Access and Crisis line at 888-724-7240 or call 2-1-1 San Diego to receive information on substance use disorder (SUD) treatment options available throughout the County. You can safely dispose of expired, unused, or unneeded prescription medications by taking them to a Take Back Day or to community safe disposal locations that are open daily.
