The map also displays where naloxone is publicly available. Naloxone (also known as Narcan) is a medication used to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Opioids, such as heroin, morphine, and prescription pain medications like oxycodone, can cause respiratory depression, which is the leading cause of death in opioid overdose. Naloxone works by binding to the same receptors in the brain that opioids bind to, effectively reversing and blocking the effects of the opioids.
